The weather has been miserable here this week and it seems people’s spirits are down and everyone I talk to is slightly depressed or stressed about the upcoming holidays.  So I thought we could all use a little smile at pictures of my belly up dogs.

The first time my mom saw Pinot upside down and belly up, she scolded Pinot for being unladylike.  Apparently ladies do not lie on their backs with their legs open up in the air.

Especially not next to their pink Hello Kitty beds.

Lokie loves to flip over for tummy rubs.

I turned around one day and found her belly up like this.

I am buddha, rub my belly.

But dogs don’t just go belly up for tummy rubs.  They also flip over when they find something really smelly to roll around in.

My parents once brought Pinot to the train station to pick me up.  There was a park across the street from the station so they took her for a walk while waiting.  Pinot found the biggest and smelliest pile of goose poop and happily dove head first and belly up, rolling in ecstasy in it.  By the time I arrived at the station, my parents had the most fragrant, goose poop smelling hot dog in the country.

I took one whiff and said, Eeewwwww!  You guys can keep her tonight!  (We had been arguing about who gets to keep Pinot – they wanted her to stay another night).  My dad immediately tried to hand her off to me and said, No thank you, you can have her back.

If you’ve ever had a goose poop rolling dog, then you understand the stench and how even after a bath, it lingers.  But at least Pinot had a great time rolling around in it.

Pinot taught Lokie how to find the smelliest dead worms in our yard and roll on them.

Now Lokie is an expert at finding deceased smelly creatures to go belly up on.

Dogs also go belly up to show submission to another dog.  When Pinot first met Max, Jim’s parents’ chocolate lab, she immediately flipped over in front of him.

Max looks a little bewildered at what he’s suppose to do with this upside down wiener.

Maybe give her belly a sniff?

Whatever the reason, dogs love to go belly up and we can’t resist giving them tummy rubs when they do, even when they are just chillin’ in the grass.

And when they look like some exotic striped creature sunbathing.
