Dachshund Underground Railroad – a Dachshund Rescue Transport
Early one Sunday, on a beautiful fall day, our two weary travellers opened their eyes and gave a great big stretch. After giving them good morning kisses and head rubs, their host let them outside to use the bathroom. Don’t worry, our travellers are dachshunds. They have been riding on the Dachshund Underground Railroad since yesterday and have another long day of travel ahead.
Our travellers, Tinkerbelle (a dachshund mix)
and Mojo (a black and tan dappled)
had started in Tennessee with 3 other dachshunds that were rescued by All American Dachshund Rescue. All day yesterday, the 5 were transported from Tennessee all the way up to Pennsylvania by a bunch of really nice people each driving a leg to get them to the start of their new lives.
Now it is only Tinkerbelle and Mojo left on this journey today. Tinkerbelle doesn’t know it yet, but she is about to meet her new forever family. And she will have 2 human sisters and a dachshund sister to help spoil her!
When this Dachshund Underground Railroad got to New York, Tinkerbelle met her new dad for the first time.

While Tinkerbelle was really happy to go with her new dad, she soon realized that she was leaving Mojo behind. Even though the 2 had only known each other a short while, they bonded on this trip and it was sad to say goodbye.
Mojo came over and they gave each other kisses before they parted. Tinkerbelle looked back to say, can’t Mojo come with me?
But Mojo had to continue on his journey to New Hampshire. Unlike Tinkerbelle, Mojo has not found his forever home yet. He was pulled from a kill shelter in AR by a good Samaritan who helped get him into the dachshund rescue and is now on his way to his foster home.
He will have no problem finding his forever home, as everyone transporting him fell in love with him. Mojo is the sweetest little man and lives up to his name. He willingly jumped into laps or arms and snuggled with whoever was transporting him.
Travelling on the Dachshund Underground Railroad can be stressful, as you are passed from person to person, car to car all day long, but this doesn’t faze Mojo. He accepted all the love showered on him as his due and regally accepted all the hugs and kisses.
He posed proudly for pictures.
He enjoyed his perch high up.
He paused on a pee break to lean on you and make sure you are still there.
He got more hugs.
And even more love.
No, I don’t think our traveller Mojo will have any trouble finding his forever home. Who can resist this perfect little guy?

As for Tinkerbelle, she is settling into her new family, who have renamed her Nala. And not only does she have a new first name, she has a middle name too! Nala Hope. Just like her new dachshund sister, Spirit Rose.

It will take some time for Nala to feel completely at home and realize that this is now her forever home, not just one that she is passing through on her way to her next leg. But with all the love and attention being showered on her by her new humans, it won’t be long until she is making herself at home on the couch.
Maybe she already is.
As the day draws to a close, everyone involved in this Dachshund Underground Railroad feels blessed that they were a part of helping these 5 dogs get to a new life.
And next weekend, as people go about their days, a whole new set of dogs will be riding the Dachshund Underground Railroad on the way to their new life. Maybe you’ll be one of the people lucky enough to help transport them. Or even adopt one?

I had Mojo and Tinkerbelle together in the back seat when I was driving and they did cuddle up together while riding.
I like Tinkerbelle’s new name. Such a sweet little girl.
I can never understand why the dogs I’ve transported have ended up in shelters. I haven’t seen a “bad” one, yet!
I know! Everyone single one of them deserves a good life and I’m just glad I can help out in some way.

I was Tinkerbelle’s foster mom, thank you so much for posting the pix’s on your blog. Nala as her new family calls her is such a great little lady. I heard from Lori Nala’s mom yesterday and is she is doing great.
I did the leg from Crossville, TN to Knoxville, TN and fell in love with Mojo, I wanted to take him home with me to foster. I am sure that he will be adopted soon.

Must be so hard as the foster to let them go, even though you know they are going to a good home. Nala is so sweet and the way she and Mojo were kissing before they parted was so touching! I know Nala’s new family is loving her 🙂
I also am a foster mom and transporter for AADR
I was doing home visit and taking Capp to his forever home on Saturday at 11am in Jessup MD.
They were having trouble getting legs filled and over night. Hung out till 10pm to meet the leg coming into Alexandria Va. Picked up MoJo Tinkerbelle and Sassie.
Got back to Lancaster Pa at 1:am Well what a time we had. My 5 of course barked and carried on and Herman who’s vacationing with us for a week and these 3. Well 9 dogs at 1am all out in the yard running around having fun and barking, I am sure my neighbors probably weren’t to happy with me.
Tinkerbelle and MoJo were given a little dinner, not to much, to late and they were traveling the next morning.
Around 2am or so, everyone settled in.
All were up at 7 on Sunday out to romp and play. Hit the road with Tinkerbelle and Mojo around 8 to meet in Morgantown. Broke my heart to have to put them back in the car to have to travel one more day.
But they were finally going to their final destination by evening.
I have been fostering and transporting for 3 years now, there isn’t any greater feeling more than the pure happiness you feel knowing your part of a great organization and helping all these precious ones find their forever homes.
I love each and everyone. Their so wonderful and all the want is love and security. It will be a looooooong time till I ever think of stopping.
If anyone is looking for a good/great organization to help, please consider helping whether transport, fostering or even adopting, it’s the most rewarding thing you’ll ever do.
Also AADR auction starts Nov. 1st. We have one in the fall and one in spring and than our calendar sales. These three things we do to raise funds to continue the great work AADR does.
Celeste – you are the host I referred to at the beginning of the post! I didn’t realize you had 9 dogs with you at the time – lol. I would have added that into the post. I’m with you – I love being able to help them, although I can’t bring myself to foster yet. I would be a foster fail every time and end up with 20 dachshunds 🙂 So I do what I can with transports, and writing posts like this to help spread the word!
You can foster, you’ll love it. It isn’t as hard as you think, I do 95% of my own home visits and take them with me and all goes well they stay. I have traveled 4 hrs each way. I love road trips and meeting the forever folks and to see where their ending up, is wonderful. In the end it’s worth every minute, while their with you. Please consider trying it.

I was honored to be one of Mojo and Tinkerbell’s drivers. They were both absolutely precious and I will never comprehend how anyone could part with them. These babies will forever be part of my transport memories.

What an interesting story. what happened to Mojo? Has he found a forever home. The pictures are really nice and I have enjoyed reading about the underground railroad. How is your Dad doing? I hope he is steadily getting well as days go by. I wish him all the best and a quick recovery!
Mojo found a forever home! I heard that one of the drivers adopted him. Lucky Mojo 🙂 My dad is slowly recovering, one day at a time. But he’s very happy to be home! Thanks so much for asking!
I would dearly love a 3rd dachshund to add to our family! I am waiting patiently for a rescue or an adult dog needing a home – they are so hard to find here (which I guess is a good thing) but I wish you could just send me a half dozen in the post 🙂
That is a good thing that you don’t have so many dogs needing homes down there! I wish I could send you some doxies from here that need a good home 🙂 I’m sure they would love being with your two. Good luck – I hope you post about it when/if you do get a 3rd dachshund!
